PA-GERMAN SMOKEHOUSE
Smokehouses are pretty much a thing of the past thanks to refrigeration and grocery stores with their year-round supplies of hams, bacon, and other smoked meats. However, a few of these structures still stand - some even being used yet! - and occasionally we hear from an owner who wants to put new life into one of these aging structures. This particular smokehouse was already in need of repair when a storm lifted the entire roof structure and several courses of wall logs off the building. Several more of the intact wall logs were rotted. Duplicating the half dovetail-corner joinery, we replaced the missing and damaged logs with vintage white oak logs. We reconstructed the roof using most of the original parts. New chinking and wood shingles completed the project, and another small piece of our heritage is standing tall.
