SPRING ROOM Originally a farmhouse's utilitarian spring-room, the old addition had fallen on very hard times. The only redeeming thing about the space was the exceptional red sandstone water trough and the still-active spring that fed it. Because the room adjoined the newly renovated kitchen, the owners wanted to improve this area and make it an inviting entry area. Stone walls were exposed, cleaned, and re-pointed;
the cracked and uneven concrete floor was removed and replaced with granite flooring and in-floor heat; a powder room and gardener's potting closet were added; and, vintage doors, windows, and hardware were restored or reproduced. The addition is now a serene oasis within the house - with the 200-year old
sandstone trough still intact and icy cold spring water flowing through it yet.
