C. 1795 LOG HOUSE
The owners of this log house know that restoration makes sense not only for promoting community pride, but it also makes sense commercially. The house had undergone major re-muddling during its lifetime, but the vinyl siding hid a big problem; the lower courses of logs on all four sides had rotted. The house was sinking in on itself! Bracing the entire house on all sides and jacked up on steel beams below, we replaced the rotted logs with solid, vintage beams. We re-chinked the logs, restored window sash to their original configuration, replaced the front porch with a more correct pent roof, and replaced the metal roof with wood shingles - even the original colors were determined by paint scrapings. When completed, the building was leased to a retail shop. A historic structure was preserved, a small business could grow, a neighborhood was improved, and an investor spent wisely.
